the photoshoot story
If I’m being honest the rebranding was just an excuse for a photoshoot (kidding!). Though of course, a rebranding demands a photoshoot. The goal was to capture the essence of Gerda Creates, women of color, but especially black women being their beautiful selves. Planning for the photoshoot started weeks ago with brainstorming. I knew the concept was “that girl,” but how was I going to define it?
That Girl?
The girl I had in mind was the everyday girl who knew her beauty. Maybe she wasn’t always in a dress and heels but looked good 24/7. Self-care and her happiness were her priority. She was the type of girl that was always on the go and looking for places she shined in. I landed on something between “American Apparel with a hint of Urban Outfitters.” But the concept grew and evolved to match my core message. That here people who look like me are beautiful and the inspiration.
If you follow me on Instagram, then you know I posted a model casting call. The girls I chose for this shoot needed to be the girls this brand was created for. I wanted girls with varying body types and skin tones. Girls you would see walking down the street living their best lives. I think the girls I chose embodied that and they made this photoshoot amazing! Not only are they stunning but they were open and flexible.
The day came with its own struggles but one thing that I can say is we had created a community. It was such an amazing day, filled with great energy. I am so grateful to the models, manifest for renting their space, and oddsideart for lending their equipment to support in bringing this together!
Y’all stay ready I might call on you next to model at my next shoot ;)
With love, Gerda Creates!
